This morning, I announced our country’s next Governor General: Mary Simon. Ms. Simon has long been an advocate for Canadian Inuit and Indigenous peoples, and I know she’ll serve all Canadians with the same dedication and integrity. https://bit.ly/3hJ5b58
Among many other roles, Ms. Simon has served as President of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, the Inuit Tapirit Kanatami, and Makivik Corporation. She has represented our country as the Ambassador to Denmark, and was Canada’s first-ever Ambassador for Circumpolar Affairs.
She was directly involved in the implementation of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, in the negotiations leading to the entrenchment of Aboriginal and treaty rights in the Canadian Constitution, and in the creation of the Arctic Council.

Entre autres fonctions, Mme Simon a été présidente de la Conférence circumpolaire inuite, de l’Inuit Tapirit Kanatami et de la Société Makivik. Elle a représenté notre pays comme ambassadrice au Danemark et a été la première ambassadrice canadienne aux Affaires circumpolaires.
Elle a contribué de près à la mise en œuvre de la Convention de la baie James et du Nord québécois, aux négociations menant à l’inscription des droits ancestraux et issus de traités dans la Constitution canadienne et à la création du Conseil de l’Arctique.

Former diplomat and Inuk leader Mary Simon named as Canada’s next governor general
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Mary Simon will become Canada’s 30th governor general, the first Indigenous person to hold the post. Simon is a former Canadian diplomat and an advocate for Inuit rights and culture. Supreme Court Justice Richard Wagner has served as acting governor general since January, when former governor general Julie Payette resigned after an independent review concluded she created a toxic work environment.
