The Louie family overcame years of discrimination and hardship by staying true to the values of inclusion, loyalty, and kindness – values that were at the foundation of their successful Vancouver grocery business in the 1900s and their decision to serve in uniform on behalf of Canada in WW2.
As we mark the end of Asian Heritage Month, their story — so beautifully shared by Tzu-I Chung — reminds us of the incredible contributions that Asian Canadians have made to our country’s multicultural fabric. In the face of rising fear and hate, we must stand strongly against racism, and fiercely defend the very values that make us Canadian.

La famille Louie a surmonté des années de discrimination et d’épreuves en restant fidèle aux valeurs d’inclusion, de loyauté et de gentillesse – les valeurs qui étaient au cœur de leur entreprise, une épicerie florissante à Vancouver, dans les années 1900 et de leur décision de servir le Canada en uniforme pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale.
Alors que nous célébrons la fin du Mois du patrimoine asiatique, leur histoire — si magnifiquement racontée par Tzu-I Chung — nous rappelle les contributions incroyables que les Canadiens d’origine asiatique ont apportées au tissu multiculturel de notre pays. Face à la montée de la peur et de la haine, nous devons nous opposer fermement au racisme et défendre farouchement les valeurs canadiennes.
